Mary Olivera has over 30 years of experience in numerous roles in healthcare sterile processing, distribution, and materials management. Ms. Olivera actively participates in monitoring, surveying, and training interdepartmental staff in the proper cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization practices, and has been highly committed to the standardization of interdepartmental processes.  A regular recruit on expert panels regarding sterile processing and a past President of the New York State Central Service organization, she continues to play a major role in promoting higher educational requirements for central service professionals to increase patient safety.

Ms. Olivera brings to the table extensive knowledge of Joint Commission, DNV-GL, AAMI, OSHA, CDC, and DoH regulations. She specializes in budgeting, change management, inventory management, process re-engineering, program and project management, vendor relationships, quality control, six sigma, supply chain, and total quality management.

Ms. Olivera is an educator and has published numerous articles related to sterile processing, surgical services, process improvement, and guides to achieve successful accreditation surveys.   In September 2006, Healthcare Purchasing News published a feature article about NYU Medical Center’s Central Sterile Supply Department detailing her work as the initiative leader—efforts that earned the facility the Healthcare Purchasing News 2006 CS/SPD Department of the Year distinction.

Ms. Olivera has successfully renovated multiple Sterile Processing departments without interruption of the surgical services caseload, consolidated hospital sterile processing departments to achieve efficiencies, implemented transport programs between facilities, increased quality processes, and applied remediation programs that led to outstanding remarks from the Joint Commission surveyor.  As a consultant she has lead process improvement in Supply Chain, High level disinfection and Sterile Processing practice for multiple clients facilitating successful accreditation surveys.

Other accomplishments include the 2006 National Central Service of the Year award given by Healthcare Purchasing News, as well as the 2007 IAHCSMM Educator of the Year award. She also was named by Healthcare Purchasing News in 2007 as a person to watch in Central Service as well as being awarded the publication’s Department of the Year Award in 2006. In 2000, she received the President’s Award from the New York City Association for Central Service Professionals.  Mary has authored and published numerous articles related to process improvement, central sterile practice and guides to achieve successful accreditation surveys.

Ms. Olivera obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Nyack College and her Master of Science degree in Health Service Administration at Iona College.  She also holds several IAHCSMM central sterile certifications.
